The size exists for a reason
4" x 9" is the standard rack card, and it is not an arbitrary shape. It fits the display racks in hotel lobbies, visitor centers, waiting rooms and welcome desks, and it fits a #10 envelope without folding — so the same piece works as a rack display, a counter handout and a mail insert.
That is its real advantage over a brochure. A brochure has to be unfolded and worked through. A rack card is read in one glance, standing up, usually by someone deciding whether to be interested at all.
A custom size is available if you have a rack that needs something different.
Design for the top three inches
This is the thing that matters most and is almost never said: in a rack, only the top of the card is visible. Cards overlap, so roughly the top third is doing all the work.
Which means the name, the offer and the reason to pick it up have to sit at the top. A design with the logo centered and the message halfway down is invisible in the only context the product is named after.
Everything else — the detail, the photographs, the credentials, the map — goes below that, for the person who has already picked it up, and on the back.
Which paper
Rack cards get handled, carried in bags and posted. That argues for cardstock rather than text weight — a flimsy rack card bends in the rack and looks tired before anyone touches it.
80 lb or 100 lb cardstock is the sensible range. Go to 120 lb or 130 lb thick stock when the card is doing premium work: a resort, a clinic, a high-value service, anything where the card is the first physical thing a customer holds.
On finish: gloss for photography-led cards, matte if anyone will write on it, satin or silk when the card has both images and a block of text.

Questions we get asked
More than the rack holds, because the point is to refill it. A rack pocket takes fifty or so; if you are stocking several locations, work out the refill cycle and order for a few months at once — the per-card price drops sharply with quantity.
Same-day production is available on this product. Call ahead if the timing is tight so we know it is coming.
On a rack card, yes — this is one of the few printed pieces people hold still while reading. Put it low on the front or on the back, keep it at least three quarters of an inch square, and make sure it goes somewhere useful on a phone.
We print them; placing them is between you and the venue. Most hotels and visitor centers have their own arrangement for rack space, and it is worth asking before you print a thousand.
