There is no sheet, only the letters
Vinyl lettering is cut from colored vinyl and the surrounding material is removed. What goes on your glass or wall is the letters themselves — no background, no edge, no rectangle. From a foot away it reads as paint.
That is what separates it from every other product on this page. A clear vinyl decal is a transparent sheet with ink on it, which is nearly invisible on glass but still a sheet. Lettering has genuinely nothing between the characters.
The trade is that it cannot do photographs, gradients or fine detail. It is flat solid color in the shape you give us. For a wordmark, a set of opening hours, a phone number or a cut logo, that is exactly right and it is the cleanest finish available. For anything with an image in it, you need one of the printed films.
What works, and what will not survive cutting
Because every shape is physically cut and then weeded by hand, some artwork does not translate.
Works well: clean typefaces at a reasonable weight, solid logos, simple icons, numbers, straightforward outlines.
Struggles: hairline serifs and very thin script, which tear when they are lifted off the backing. Tiny lettering below about half an inch tall. Fine internal detail, where the pieces inside a letter are too small to stay put. Anything with a soft edge or a shadow, which cannot exist in cut vinyl.

Size it by the reading distance
The most common mistake with lettering is ordering it too small, because it looks big on a screen and small on a building.
Work backwards from where the reader stands. Door hours read from arm's length and can be modest. A business name on a storefront window is read from the sidewalk or a parked car. A name across the top of a unit is read from a moving vehicle and needs to be far larger than feels reasonable when you are standing at your desk.
If you can, print the wording at size on paper, tape it to the glass, and walk to where your customer will be. It takes ten minutes and it is the only reliable test.

Questions we get asked
The letters arrive held together on a transfer tape so the spacing is preserved. You position the whole piece, squeegee it down, then peel the tape away and the letters stay. It is more forgiving than it sounds, but position it with tape and step back before you commit — adhesive vinyl does not want to move twice.
Usually, with heat and patience. On fresh paint, or paint that was not well prepared underneath, there is a real risk of lifting some with it. If the wall is newly painted, give it a few weeks to cure first.
Each color is cut separately and layered, so multi-color lettering is possible but it is more work and more care on application. Tell us what you have in mind and we will talk through whether cut vinyl or a printed decal is the better route.
Cut vinyl comes in stock colors rather than being printed, so it is a close match rather than an exact one. If the color has to be precise, a printed clear vinyl decal can hit it, at the cost of the no-background look.
