Count households, not people
This is the mistake almost everyone makes, and it costs real money. A save the date goes to an address. A couple is one card. A family of five is one card. Most people count heads, order nearly double what they need, and then discover the same thing again at invitation stage.
Work from an address list rather than a guest list and you will be close. Add about ten percent for the ones that get lost, spoiled, or that someone asks to keep.
It only needs three things
Names, the date, and the city. That is genuinely it. A save the date is not an invitation — it exists so people can block the weekend and book travel, and every extra detail you add is something that might change before the invitation goes out.
Adding "invitation to follow" saves you a dozen phone calls asking whether this is the invitation.
The timing, honestly
Save the dates go out well ahead of invitations, and further ahead again if guests are travelling or it falls on a holiday weekend. The people most likely to need notice are the ones you most want there.

Questions we get asked
Photo or no photo?
Either works. A photo card gets kept on a fridge, which is exactly where you want the date to live. 4" x 6" on a gloss or satin paper is the usual choice for photo save the dates.
Do we need to include the venue?
Not unless it is booked and certain. The city is enough for people to plan travel.
Can we order the invitations at the same time?
You can, though most couples do not have final details yet. Our wedding cards cover the invitation, and thank you cards the other end of it.
Do you supply envelopes?
Not with this product. Our invitations have an envelope option.
How far ahead should we send them?
Earlier than feels necessary, particularly for a destination or holiday weekend. Tell us the date and we will work back with you.
